Community vs. HIV

[ted id=962]

The women of the Shingirirai Trust know firsthand about the power of community and the sisterhood of other women for daily survival and support.  Still, the urgent need remains for better medical care.  In sub-Saharan Africa there are more HIV infections and less doctors to treat them than anywhere else in the world. Since 2001, Cape Town doctor Mitchell Besser’s ‘mothers2mothers’ program has turned a dire situation into part of the solution.

We hope you’ll find a few minutes – 18 to be precise (!) – to hear his inspiring TEDTalk about the work of mothers2mothers.

Isn’t it great to start 2012 by showcasing another program that is making a positive difference?  Like the Shingirirai Trust itself, we’re just beginning to see how women can make that difference when they are given the tools of knowledge and -  just as important – self-esteem.  Do share if you know of similar initiatives where local women are being empowered to help other women in their community.  And may 2012 be full of positive developments for you too!

  1. Thanks Caroline. It’s amazing how many positive solutions are blooming, even on ‘stony ground’!
